State of Squirrel Gliders in Albury Wodonga 2024

Albury Conservation Company developed a monitoring program for Squirrel Gliders in 2018. Each spring and autumn carries out a scientific monitoring program to detect the gliders use of hollows and nest boxes. The program was initiated in the Thurgoona/Wirlinga area before being extended to 120 sites across the main urban growth areas of Albury and Wodonga.

The 2024 report outlines the detection results for Squirrel Gliders in Spring 2024 and Autumn 2024. Sites were monitored in 4 habitat categories – Remnant, Revegetation, Riparian and Roadside. We then then compare results between years to determine any significant changes in this indicator of Squirrel Glider populations.

The 2024 report shows Squirrel Gliders represented in all habitat types across both seasons. Detection rates remain broadly consistent with 2023 and continue to be higher than 2018-2019. Far more information and detail is available in the report.

The monitoring program in 2024 has been made possible with funding from Albury City Council. Albury Conservation Company is seeking funding to enhance the monitoring program through further data collection such as habitat condition and interventions.
