Thurgoona and Wirlinga Community understanding and knowledge of Biodiversity (Sept 2013) – a social study by Charles Sturt University

Albury Conservation Company funded this social science research project into local knowledge of biodiversity.

Thurgoona / Wirlinga is a community that is transforming before our eyes. It is the planned growth corridor of Albury, with the population anticipated to grow to 50,000 in the next few decades.

The ‘Thurgoona and Wirlinga Community understanding and knowledge of Biodiversity study’ undertaken by Shelby Laird and Rosemary Black (Charles Sturt University) has provided a rare insight into current resident’s views and attitudes towards their local environment.

This information will help identify current opportunities to raise awareness and engage with the local community in biodiversity conservation activities. Also, the study provides a benchmark to enable tracking of resident’s attitudes, values, and knowledge in relation to local biodiversity as development expands.
